“Sly Dog” captained by Roberto Guerrero
Sr. won by a landslide and was dubbed “Top Boat”
in this year’s fourth installment of the Dia de
San Pedro Fishing Tournament. Sponsored by
Belikin Beer, the fishing tournament saw
thirteen boats with enthusiastic anglers embrace
the challenge for a chance to cash in on the
over fourteen thousand dollars in prizes.
As a tribute to the Dia de San Pedro
festival, the Fishing Tournament was held from
Saturday, June 28th and culminated on Sunday,
June 29th with the official weigh in on the
beach by Ambergris Divers. Despite the weather
and the rough seas, most boats could not make it
out to fish on day one, instead set out to brave
the seas on a much calmer Sunday. At the end of
the second day, spectators and party goers
surrounded the weigh in station for a look at
what the boats brought in, a fitting “catch of
the day” would best describe the modus. Points
were allotted at one point per pound and the
minimum weight for a White Marlin was thirty
five pounds, Blue Marlins of one hundred pounds,
Wahoo’s weighing more than fifteen pounds,
Sailfish of thirty pounds, Tuna of five pounds,
Kingfish of ten pounds, and Dorado of at least
five pounds. Boats were penalized for reeling in
a Blue Marlin under one hundred pounds, and a
deduction of ten points was taken off for every
pound that was under the mark.
The results are in courtesy of the
tournament organizers, here is a look of the
winner’s circle. Announcements were made at
Caliente who offered a delicious Jalisco Chicken
and Wine Tenderloin buffet for those in
attendance. Top Boat went to last year’s
runner-up, ‘Sly Dog’ captained by Roberto
Guerrero Sr. who finally got a taste of
“victory” in four years of participating. Sly
Dog’s catch totaled the most points of five
hundred and twenty seven (527 points) which
earned them the handsome cash prize of $4,500
plus a trophy. Second place went to “Cristina”
captained by fishing veteran Alberto Bradley who
after weigh in totaled sixty five points. The
Bradley’s collected the second place prize of
$2,500, whilst third place of $1,000 was won by
“Seaduction,” the only catamaran that
participated was captained by Elito Arceo who
earned a total of fifty eight points. Fourth
place boat was “Aaliyah Marlee” captained by
Enrique Marin who totaled thirty points and
walked away with $750 whilst fifth place was
rounded off by the tournament sponsor Barry
Bowen onboard “Lancha Verde” who totaled twenty
two points and collected a $500 cash prize.
Several other prizes were issued: Karen Canul
onboard “Fish Tales” took the prize for Top
Female Angler, whilst Top Junior Angler went to
Emmanuel Samos aboard “Sly Dog”. The “Sly Dog”
crew also took home prizes for Heaviest Sailfish
of forty five pounds, and the Captain’s Award
for the ‘Top Dog’ of the tournament, Roberto
Guerrero Sr. Gerald Leslie onboard “Flying Fish”
took the Heaviest Wahoo and the Smallest Vessel
Category, whilst Alberto Bradley took home the
prize for Heaviest Dorado. Heaviest Tuna was won
by Adrian Heusner of “Mad Storm” and Biggest
Barracuda went to Andy Nuņez on board
“Contender”. This year’s Calcutta bidding was
the highest yet totaling at $3,930 and, as
always, the tournament winner walked off with
the first place which was no other than the “Sly
Dog” fishing crew. Second place Calcutta prize
of $1,965 went to Alberto Bradley onboard
‘Cristina’.
In an interview with coordinator of
events, Felix Ayuso the turnout of this year’s
festivity was outstanding as expected, despite
the weather. “The tournament and Dia de San
Pedro events were excellent and proved a
success. We had several complaints about boats
not being able to make it out at sea for the
first day, but all went great for the second
day. The entire event was fascinating and I
thank all those who were apart of it,” ended
Ayuso.
The tournament once again proved to
be a first class event and the fisherman and
elated fans got more than they bargained for.
After the official weigh in, as per usual some
generous fishermen gave their catch to the
people that were on the dock. Already fishing
enthusiasts and aficionados are gearing up for
next year’s event! The organizers of the
tournament would like to take the opportunity to
thank the businesses and supporting community
who made this year’s fishing tournament such
fishing classic! |
